ECONOMICS. (KING, CHARLES, ed.). Le negociant Anglois, ou traduction libre du livre intitulé The British Merchant, contenant divers mémoires sur le commerce de l´Angleterre avec la France, le Portuugal & l´Espagne. I-II. Amsterdam (François Changuion) 1755.

Small 8:o. (5), VI-CXL, (1)-208, (6), (4), (1)-371, (5) pp. 2 titles printed in red and black with engraved vignette.
Later (mid 19th century) green half cloth, speckled edges. Minor foxing.

The most important numbers of the British Merchant, a periodical which appeared twice weekly during the summer of 1713 at the time of the proposed treaty of commerce with France collected and edited by Charles King. The object of the paper was to refute the reciprocity arguments propounded by Defoe in favor of the treaty in his "Mercator or Commerce retrieved". The British Merchant collected the opinions of contemporary merchants rather than advancing trade theory. It remained an authoritative resource until the mid eighteenth century with the last English edition published in 1743. (R.D. Sheldon in DNB).

Provenance: The von Celsing family, Biby.
