Leuchtenberg was the grandson of Maximilien de Leuchtenberg (1817-1852) and the grand-duchess Maria Nikolaïevna de Russie (1819-1876). Maximilien de L. was brother of Swedish queen Josephine of Leuchtenberg (married to Oscar I).
