Contemporary brown full calf, worn, cracks in the joints, partly gilt edges of covers, faded richly gilt spine, some small damage at head. Crack in the hinge between pp. 24 and 25. Minor foxing. Gift inscription dated 1844 on first endpaper. First edition.

Ruschenberger describes his journey, which had the purpose to obtain information and negotiating and securing treaties of friendship and commerce with Eastern powers. The journey went to the dominions of the Sultan of Muscat and Oman, to Ceylon, India, Java, Siam, Cochin China and the Bonin Islands, the Hawaiian Islands, California and Mexico.
