Large 4to (about 315x230 mm). 15 folding maps (end of vol. II), richly illustrated.
Publisher´s original beige cloth, spines with brown titles, slightly soiled and worn, small dampstain to corner of vol. I, some spots in red colour . Dedication to Gösta Nobel on first free endpaper "Till vännen Gösta Nobel med en hälsning från författaren" (=To the friend Gösta Nobel with greetings from the author), dated Helsingfors 25 april (19)41. Bookplate of Gösta Nobel. Last page and endpaper in vol. I with some holes, no loss. Loosely inserted "Donators" (=Donator´s List) dated 31.5. 1940. 2 volumes.

´´In the spring of 1906 I received orders from the Russian General Staff to undertake a journey from Russian Turkestan through Chinese Turkestan and Western China and the provinces of Kan Su, Shensi and Shansi to Peiping as the final goal. The object of this expedition was to study the conditions in the interior of Northern China, collect statistical materials and perform various tasks of a military nature´´ (Preface).
The author´s epic journey took him across the Tien Shan from Kashgar no less than three times. He then travelled through the Gobi desert to Lanchow, thence to Peking via Shansi. As Marshall Mannerheim, he later lead the Finns against the invading Russians in the Winter War, 1939-40.

Gustaf Mannerheim (1867-1951), Baron, Finnish military leader of the Whites in the Finnish Civil War, Regent of Finland (1918-19), Commander-in-chief during World War II, and Marshal of Finland 1942, President of Finland between 1944-46.

Provenance: Gustaf Oscar Ludvig (Gösta) Nobel (1886-1955), youngest son of Ludvig and Edla Nobel, was in Baku between 1914-17 and later took over as Managing Director over Branobel or "The Nobel Brothers Company" . The oil company was founded in Baku by his father and the two brothers Alfred and Robert. He and his family had to flee Russia 1918 during the Russian revoloution.
