First edition of this treatise of natural wonders, divided into 10 sections or classes, i.e. heaven, the elements, meteors, fossils or minerals, plants, birds, quadropeds, invertebrats, fishes, and humans, collected from ancient and modern literature. It was reprinted several times during the 17th century and an English translation was published in 1657. The author Joannes (or Jan) Jonston (1603-75) was born in Poland but of Scottish origin, and wrote several books on natural history and medicin. This is his first published work.
