Wilson wrecked the Antelope on Ulong and during his three-month stay while the ship was being repaired, he and his crew became somewhat involved in the affairs of the island state (Palau - Belau or Pelew, as it was then called is situated at the western outskirts of the Carolines, east of the Philippines), allied with it against the Melekeok and other peoples faring through the waters, but not necessarily getting the circumstances right all the time. On returning to England they brought with them one of the "king´s" sons, who succumbed to smallpox and died only after a couple of months in the new country. The book contains a brief vocabulary of the Palau language, pp. 251-69 in the second volume, presumably the first ever printed.
