LARGE MAP OF BERLIN. Schleuen, J. D. / Schmettau. 1757.
Engraved wall map of Berlin with 4 smaller maps and many important buildings on the sides.
Printed on four joined paper sheets. About 790 x 855 mm. Framed.
A very accurate plan of Berlin, showing for the first time the demolition of the old fortifications. It is the most important Berlin map of the 18th century, and a further development of Samuel von Schmettau´s great city map. The plan has 57 insets of important buildings and a statue, as well as four insets depicting historical maps of Berlin in the years 1650, 1688, 1700 and 1723.
A text compares Berlin most favorably to Paris, London Athens and the pallaces of Asia. An impressive prospect created by order of Fredrick the Great, as the Prussian state rose to become one of the leading powers of Europe.
An inadequately updated second edition appeared in 1773.
