Typed biography of Melville, with stamps of Douglas L. McIntyre, pasted on front fly leaf. Dedication to Walter Scott signed G. Melville Rear admiral and dated Philadelphia Oct 12/07, on first blank leaf, Melville quoting a poem, beginning with:
"Miserable they!
Who, there entangled in the gathering ice,
Take their last-look of the descending sun".
Author of these and an additional 3 lines, is named Thomson.
George Melville (1841-1912) was an American naval officer with considerable arctic experience though his legacy as engineering modernizer of the US navy is of considerably greater importance.
Walter Scott was between expeditions in 1907 and spent the year lecturing, socialising and colliding battlehips.
