Münster´s map of Scandinavia

MÜNSTER, SEBASTIAN. Gemeine Beschreibung aller Mitnächtigen Länder, alss Schweden, Gothen, Norwegien, Dennmarck, rc.(on verso, with woodcut vignette): Regiones septentrionales. Schweden, Finlande, Gothia, Nortwegien, Dennmarck, Isslandt, Lappenlande, mit anderen anstossenden Ländern. No place no date. (Basel, Henricpetrina, 1588 or later).

Handcoloured (probably later) woodcut map, one cartouche with German text, about (incl. title) 320x360 mm. Some wear to centrefold, some slight soiling and minor spots..

Münster´s atlas "Cosmographia" was first published in 1544 and is the earliest German-language description of the world. It was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. It passed through 24 editions in 100 years. This success was due to the notable woodcuts (some by Hans Holbein the Younger, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch, and David Kandel).
