8:o. 4 engraved titles with vignette (partly close cut in lower margin, partly with loss of the imprint text, partly foxed), 1 uncoloured engraving, 1 tinted aquatint, 50 handcoloured aquatint plates, of which 28 by Rowlandson (all, a few plates shaved with loss to the imprint or titling but not affecting the image area, some foxing, text partly discoloured by plates).
Contemporary brown half calf, slightly worn, new marbled papers to the boards, rebacked, gilt spines. 1 page with tear, partly some foxing or spotting. Bookplate of C. Robert Bignold. 4 volumes.

Contains the original issue of Combe´s Tours of Dr. Syntax under the title of "The School-master´s Tour" running through all four volumes. It was published in book-form under the title of "Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque".
