8vo. 202 x 140 mm. (16), 1034, (5) pp. Woodcut initials. Burnt contemporary boards. Text intact, save dampstain in margin from title to p. 24 and occasional minor stains.
Probably first printing of this edition. A second appeared in 1558 and a third in 1570.
Isocrates (436-338 BC) was a famous Greek rhetorician and orator, pupil to Tisias, who in turn was the foremost pupil of Corax of Syracuse, seen as the founder of Greek rhetoric as a discipline.
Hieronymus Wolf (1516-1580), German scholar and librarian. He taught himself Greek while studying in Wittenberg (for, amongst others, Melanchton) and published a German translation of Demosthenes´s speeches in 1549. His most famous translation (into Latin) is this, of the collected works of Isocrates.
