CARL STEPHAN BENNET (1800-1878): "Teaterdekoration å St Carlo-theatern i Neapel", signerad samt daterad i blyerts 1832, tuschteckning, 17x26 cm.
.
Historik: Bennet was in Italy between 8 September 1830 to 30 March 1832 where he spent most of his time in Rome and Naples. In Rome he was part of the circles of Horace Vernet, B. Thorvaldsen, C. Hansen and B. E. Fogelberg. Characteristic of Bennets work is his ability to create a sense of monumentality, of which the present drawing is a superb example. Together with Hjalmar Mörner (1804-1837), Gustaf Söderberg (1799-1875) and Alexander Clemens Wetterling (1796-1858), Bennet belongs to the generation of Swedish artist that visited Rome in advance of more internationally acclaimed Swedish artists such as Gustaf Wilhelm Palm (1810-1890). The majority of the drawings and oilstudies Bennet executed in Italy are in Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. Exhibitions of his work were held at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, Stockholm in 1978, Carl Stephen Bennet 1800-1878, and at Säftstaholms Castle in 1998, B. Rapp, Stadsutsikter och landskap - Minnesbilder från Stockholm, Vingåker och Rom av Carl Stephen Bennet 1800-1878.
