Jacob Cats (1577-1660), Dutch poet, jurist and politician. He was enormously popular in Holland, not least for his emblemata books and for his moralistic and conservative poetry. The first edition of his collected works appeared in 1658 and for a couple of centuries it is said to ghave been the most common book in Dutch family homes beside the bible. He´s no longer widely read, but many of his poetical phrases have lived on as idiomatic expressions in the Dutch language.
