8vo. 215 x 135 mm. (4), 268, (1) pp, 34 double page lithographed plates. Sewn as issued, uncut, in worn and partly loose original paper wrappers. A few minor stains, Occasional light foxing.
First edition. The optical telegraph, or semafore, was invented by the author´s brother Claude. Together they created a 120 km relay line on the 120 km between Paris and Lille in 1792. More lines were built and operated until 1846, when the electric telegraph was put in use.
