Bernhard Varens (Bernhardus Varenius -1622-1650) from German Hitzacker, studied to become a physician, but after having moved to Amsterdam and met the traveller Jodocus Schouten, the geographer and cartograph Willem Blaeu and others, he changed his career, which was cut short by his early death. The Geographia generalis... still made an important impact and was translated and printed well into the 1700´s.
Originally published at Amsterdam by L. Elzevir in 1650 and 1649 respectively. The first work is his most known, here edited and improved by Isaac Newton for the Cambridge edition. The second work is in part a Latin translation of Jodocus Schouten´s account of Siam.
