LEMUEL FRANCIS ABBOTT (1760-1803): "Henry Calender", mezzotintgravyr, ca 38x27 cm,
HISTORIK:
Henry Callender was a prominent English golfer in the late 18th Century and Captain of the society of Golfers at Blackheath. He is depicted wearing the Field Marshal´s uniform of the Blackheath Society of Golfers. The two golf clubs illustrated are said to be still in the possession of the Royal Blackheath Golf Club (1766)
Royal Blackheath´s Spring Medal, formerly known as the Knuckle Club Medal, dates back to 1789, when there was a group allied to the club, known as the Knuckle Club, who played separately from other members. This is believed to be the oldest known golfing medal. The Knuckle Club´s most famous visitor was Colonel Alexander Mackenzie who played in the winter season 1795-96, in between his many campaigns.
