8vo. 230 x 160 mm. XVI, 743, (9) pp. Illustrated. 44 photographic and 2 lithographed plates. Well-preserved publisher´s cloth, edges trimmed. A few discrete pencil markings in margins. Label of Mary T. Babcock on front fly leaf, glue stains on the following.
Mary Kingsley (1862-1900), British anthropologist and naturalist. Her travels to Africa were made in 1893 and 1895. Being for her time remarkably unprejudiced regarding race, she was reciprocated with trust and respect, which gave her access to local information seldom experienced by her mainly male colleagues. During her travels she also discovered new species of fish.
Provenance: Sten Ringselle (1949-2017), Swedish antiquarian bookdealer who in 1992 opened his shop Antiquaria in Gothenburg.
