4to. 227 x 183 mm. (10),+ 888,+ (18) pp. Title printed in red and black. Minor foxing and spotting throughout, occasional underlinings with ink, a few inkstains. Contemporary vellum. Incision in top edge of front fly leaf.
Willems 1190. Berghman 298. Rahir 1214. Camus 606. Second edition, but the first of the four Elzevir editions. The work was first published in Leiden in 1644. Arnold Vinnius (1588-1657) was a Dutch jurisconsult, professor in Roman law at Leiden. This is his main work, in which Dutch Law was given a historical and philosophical background, and it was widely influential throughout Europe. In Sweden Vinnius was introduced by Johannes Loccenius. The book was partly banned in Spain by the Inquisition because of its views on marriage.
