The book is an important collection of philological texts with contributions by C. Vitellus, M. Terentius Varro, S. Pompeius Festus, Nonus Marcellus and others. From the beginning as comments to the epigrams of Martial, it developed to a cornucopia of the latin language. As a Latin grammar and collection of citations it was for a long time one of the most beloved Latin encyclopaedias in Europe.
