8:o (about 208x131 mm.). (11, Errata leaf bound after p. xvi), xii-xvi, (1)-624 pp. Engraved frontispiece and extra title (minor foxing), 38 engraved plates H. K. Browne (all, one with mended tear, partly foxed, 2 cut in outer margin with some loss of caption text).
Later (20th century) red half morocco, gilt spine in six compartments. Halftitle soiled and mended in upper outer corner. Some foxing. Bookplate Bøgh Aalborg.

Eckel pp. 74-76, Smith I:8. First edition in bookform. Dombey and Son contains the first published example of a so-called dark plate, which was created by a machine process that tinted each plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast (plate at p. 547).

Provenance: Sten Ringselle (1949-2017), Swedish antiquarian bookdealer who in 1992 opened his shop Antiquaria in Gothenburg.
