TEMPLE IN CHINA. "Vue d´un temple chinois. Le grand Kia-cheu de la Chine, ou temple des Aïeux, préparé pour le sacrifice solemnel, qui les Chinois célébrent pour leurs ancêtres, le 14. de la lune d´aoust: on y voit les portraits des défunts arrangés dans des niches aux endroits les plus eminents du temple: les dragons qui les entourent sous les armes ou enseignes de l´Empire chinois". Paris, chez Jacques Chereau, no date (c. 1750-60).
Engraved handcoloured "vue d´optique" (plate size about 305x445 mm.). In passepartout. Some slight dampstaining in left outer margin.

Vues d´optique were engravings to be viewed through a convex lens, such that the viewer saw a reversed and seemingly three-dimensional scene.
Jacques Chéreau (1688-1776) was a printmaker and publisher of optical prints at the rue St. Jacques in paris. After his death the business was continued by his grandson, Jacques-François Chéreau (1742-1794).
