FIRST EDITION OF COXE TRAVELS (2). COXE, WILLIAM. Travels into Poland, Russia, Sweden, and Denmark. Interspersed with historical relations and political inquiries. I-II. London (printed by J. Nichols for T. Cadell) 1784.

(4), v-xvi, (3), 4-590, (2), iii-vi, (4), 5-631, (1) pp. With 12 folding engraved maps, 11 engraved plates and portraits, 3 engraved vignettes in text (complete according to plate list, maps with some offsetting, 2 maps with minor tear to folds, some with slight foxing).
Contemporary half calf bindings, gilt spines with red title label, speckled edges, partly worn and rubbed, especially to edges, spine to vol. II with some damages and wear to upper and lower edge, inner joint to vol. I partly split.
Text partly with some foxing, 391-402, partly with some staining to margins, 1 page with tear to margin. Engraved bookplate Thomas Weld, Esq. Lulworth Castle. 2 volumes.

The maps are: Map of Poland, Russia, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Caspian Sea, Canal Vishnei Voloshok, Sweden, Stockholm, Canal Trollhaetta, Danish isles, Copenhagen, and the Canal of Kiel.
Illustrations include portraits of Stanislaus Augustus of Poland, Catherine II, Gustavus III of Sweden, the rebel Pugatchef, costume and wildlife plates, and genealogical and statistical tables.
There is also a chapter about Linnaeus and scientists like Bergman, Wallerius and Cronstedt.
The historian and cleric William Coxe (1748-1828), did his observations on a tour of the northern countries in 1775 to 1779, while travelling as tutor to Lord George Herbert, future 11th Earl of Pembroke (1759-1827).
Provenance: Thomas Weld, esq. Of Lulworth castle, Dorsetshire, was the founder of the Roman catholic college at Stoneyhurst in Lancashire. His son Thomas became a Cardinal of the Church of Rome.
