MAP ON POLYNESIA AND AUSTRALIA 1806. CANZLER, Friedrich Gottlieb - HOMANN HEIRS. Karte vom Fünften Erdtheil oder Polynaesien-Inselwelt oder Australien od. Südindien. Nürnberg, Homann heirs, 1806.

Engraved map, some outline colour, circular title cartouche, c. 450570 mm. Partly browned, dampstains and spotting, folds and creases. Framed.
Engraved by J. L. J. Rausch. Published in Nuremberg by Homann Heirs.

Australia is called "Ulimaroa oder Neu-Holland".The Maori name Ulimaroa was first used by the Swedish geographer and cartographer Daniel Djurberg, who published many geographical general works and charts. This strange denomination seems to have appeared for the first time in a book by Djurberg printed in Stockholm in 1776.

The map reaches from southeastern and eastern Asia down to Australia, New Zealand, the Marquesas and Pitcairn Island, as well as the Hawaiian Islands ("Sandwich Inseln"). The coast of present-day South Australia is labeled unknown ("unbekante Küste") as are parts of the southern and eastern coasts of New Guinea.
