FRENCH LETTER AND DOCUMENT (2). SAINT-PIERRE, JACQUES BERNARDIN HENRI DE. 1 autograph signed letter (ASL), dated Paris, 20 august 1792, to M. La Baudunais Jouneaulx (Paris), in small 8vo (c. 180x140 mm), folds, spotting.
Jacques-Henri "Bernardin de Saint-Pierre", (1737-1814), writer and botanist, mainly known for his 1788 novel "Paul and Virginie" (a popular children´s book in the 19th. century).
Jouneaulx could perhaps be a member of the Parliament.
The letter deals with an election « Je suis sensible au projet de motion que Monsieur La Baudunais devait adresser à la section des postes et je suis en même tems très aise qu´il s´en soit abstenu puisqu´il y était question de moi. » [=M. La Baudunais was about to table a motion but he didn´t and Bernardin de Saint-Pierre is satisfied about it.]
"Monsieur La Baudunais ne sera pas embarassé pour donner sa voix dans les élections puisse t-il y trouver beaucoup de citoyens qui lui ressemblent !" [= "M. La Baudunais will not be embarassed to vote for this election" and Bernardin de Saint-Pierre adds "may he find many people like him !"]
Bernardin de Saint-Pierre also writes : "J´ai publié tout ce que j´ai cru pouvoir être utile à ma malheureuse patrie. Ma santé dérangée m´interdit toute espèce de travail." [ ="I have published everything I believed to be helpful for my unfortunate country. My poor health prevent me from doing any work." ]
MERLIN, PHILIPPE-ANTOINE. Document /letter signed, on printed document, dated 13 Vendémiaire an 5 (October 4th 1796). The letter is adressed to the authority representative of the Revolutionnary Gourvernment in the city of Niort.
Merlin de Douai informs the authority that the newspaper called "Le Rédacteur2 will be sent from today directly to the local administrative area of Brion. Consequently, he asks him to put a stop to send the newspaper.
(Le Rédacteur contained mainly juridical information).
P. H. Merlin was also known as "Merlin de Douai", (1754-1838), a politician and important lawyer. During the Revolution period, he was made Minister of Justice (1795) and later Minister of the General Police (1796) under the Directory before moving back to the Justice Ministry (3 April 1796).
