Contemporary brown calf, upper board richly blindstamped and with 2 brass fittings (clasps missing)
, somewhat worn, spine in five compartments and with manuscript title, lower board later added and mended in the joints, new inner doublure to lower board and endpaper. Last leaf with mended tears, soiled. Old signature on title. Stamped bookplate of Roman Kaczmar.
First Gryphius edition.
The binding seems to have been broken up and some other print taken out, the spine seems to miss a part where the later lower board is placed.
Maffei´s "Commentariorum Urbanorum" (first published in 1506) is an encyclopedia of all subjects known at the time, divided in three parts. I. Geography II. Anthropologia (biography) III. Philologia (including natural sciences, grammar, philosophy and so on).
