Large folio (about 430x290 mm.). (12), 1-424 (fol. 1 missing, present in facsimile), First title printed in red and black with woodcut printer´s device (lacks second title [fol. 1] with woodcut printer´s device and another woodcut verso), 2 woodcuts in text. Text printed in red and black.
Worn contemporary blindtooled pigskin over wooden boards, damages with loss of leather on lower board, wormed, larger spots, manuscript text in upper margin of upper board "Decretum", brass fittings (clasps and one fitting missing), damaged spine in six compartments, cracks in the joints. Indexing flaps. Partly wormed, mostly in the beginning, partly marginally dampstained, harder at end, some foxing and spotting. Roman Kaczmar´s stamped bookplate. Inside of upper board with mounted catalogue cut.

Decretum Gratiani is the cornerstone of modern canon law. Probably compiled by Gratian, a Camaldolese monk, around 1140, it was the first work of its kind, and became the basic text for the study of canon law for many centuries.
