Together with Wilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916), Ejnar Nielsen (1872-1956) and Harald Slott-Møller (1864-1937), Peter Alfred Schou is one of Denmark´s most important symbolist painters. The present work, painted shortly after his return to Denmark from Hamburg in 1898, shows strong influence of Wilhelm Hammershøi´s work, both in spirit, subject and colour.
Schou had aspired to become a painter since his youth. His father had studied at the Royal Academy and his uncle had been a pupil of Jens Juel (1745-1802). Born to a family of merchants, however, he followed his father into business and attended a trade school. In 1864 he joined the family business when it was transferred to Copenhagen and from 1865, he looked after his family´s interests in Hamburg from where he traveled widely in Germany and Scandinavia. On a visit to Stockholm he met Felicia Griffé, a woman of French extraction. Her premature death in 1869 became a turning point in his life. From then he decided to devote his life to art. Between 1873-74 he attended the Academy in Dresden and between 1875-77 he studied for Théobold Chartran in Paris. He there met the Danish poet and painter Holger Drachman and the young Danish art critic Karl Madsen, the future promotor of Wilhelm Hammershøi and director of Statens Museum for Kunst. Between 1879-80 Schou studied with Léon Bonnat. His first exhibition at the Salon came in 1880. In 1881 he returned to Hamburg. The following year, a work of his was rejected by the censorship committee for the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in Copenhagen. As a result of his experience at Charlottenborg, he established the "Actclub" in Hamburg, a venue where artists could paint nude models without academic constraints. Among those who worked there were Arthur Siebelist, Julius von Ehren and Julius Wohlers. In 1892 Holger Drachman went into self-elected exile in Hamburg where he wrote Unge viser. Through Drachmann´s influence, Alfred Lichtwark, the director of Kunsthalle, became interested in Schou´s work. Between 1894-98 Schou exhibited regularily at the museums annual spring exhibitions. In 1898 he returned to Denmark but continued to exihibit at Kunsthalle.
In Copenhagen he first exhibited at Rådhusudstillingen in 1901, and from 1902-14 he annually participated in Charlottenborg forårsudstilling and Kunstnernes efterårsudstilling. Works by him were also included in stately exhibitions of Danish art held outside Denmark, Guildhall, London 1907 which included works by Wilhelm Hammershøi, the Baltic Exhibition in Malmö 1914 and Brighton 1921.
In 1911, he was awarded Det Anckerske Legat, a grant for composers, writers and artists and in 1908 and 1912, he received the Eckerberg Medal. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at Charlottenborg in 1915.
Works by Schou can be found in Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, Aalborg, Randers Artmuseum, Faaborg Museum, Odense Bys Museer, Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm and Brighton Museum & Art Gallery.
