LETTERS - DUCHESS OF WELLINGTON A.O. (2). Autographed letter signed by Catherine Wellesley, Duchess of Wellington (1773-1831) adressed
to the Swiss gymnast and sports pedagogue Phokion Heinrich Clias (1782-1845) in Chelsea. Dated 2/5 1824.
Written in French she informs Clias that she regrets his absence and that he will not be able to give
any lessons i gymnastics. She also informs him that "Douro" (Arthur Wellesley, her husband) has
recovered from the fall and is practicing gymnastics daily.

Catherine Wellesley, Duchess of Wellington (1773 - 1831) was the wife of Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington.

"Wednesday 21st (no month, no year) in Hampton Court.

Richard Wellesley was an Irish and British politician and colonial administrator, brother of Arthur, Field Marshall and Duke of Wellington. Richard Wellesley made his name as Governor-General of India between 1798 and 1805 ["Governor-General of India" or, from 1858 to 1947, officially the Viceroy and Governor-General of India, commonly shortened to "Viceroy of India"], and he later served as Foreign Secretary in the British cabinet and as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
