4:o (about 254x195 mm.). Engraved frontispiece (some offsetting from title in the margins), title printed uin red and black (mended tear, foxing).
Contemporary brown full calf, partly worn, mended in the joints, gilt borders, gilt edges of covers, gilt spine in six compartments. Song six lacks half-titleLeaf signed F2 in te second song with hole and loss of a few letters. Some mended marginal tears. Some foxing. Some ink corrections in text. Marginal pencil annotations.

The poem contains nine parts: The complaint, On time, death, friendship, Narcissa, The Christian triumph, The relapse, The infidel reclaim´d (in two parts), Virtue´s apology, The consolation. Publication of the first "Night" began in 1742 and was followed by other "Nights, " the eighth and ninth appearing in 1745.
The first part is here present in the second edition from 1743, the other parts are in first editions.
