French translation by Gabriel Seigneux de Correvon of Haller´s "Usong: Eine Morgenländische Geschichte", Bern 1771. Three editions of the French translation appeared in 1772, one of the others at Lausanne and one at Paris and Frankfurt, published by Eslinger (see item below).
Usong is one of Haller´s three philosophical romances, the other two being "Alfred, König der Angelsachsen" (1773) and "Fabius und Cato" (1774), in which his views as to the respective merits of despotism, of limited monarchy and of aristocratic republican governement are fully set forth.
In "Usong" Haller demonstrates his profound admiration for Eastern political systems. Though set in a fictional Persia, the political arrangements of the ideal state are drawn from Chinese Confucian philosophy. +
