Worn publisher´s halfcloth with printed boards. Spines defective. Foxing throughout, minor stains, some tears and losses of paper in margins, some damp in margins. Exlibris of William H. Ludlow. 2 volumes.
First edition. Rare, but in need of repair. Spine fragments loose in separate folder. Samuel Wells Williams (1812-1884), American linguist, diplomat, missionary and Sinologist. 1848-51 he was the editor of The Chinese Repository, a leading Western journal published in China.
