Contemporary brown half calf, partly worn, spines in six compartments with blindtooled decorations, some damages at head, red edges. 2 titles with some paper loss in lower margin. Minor spotting. Erased signature on inside of upper board. 2 titles with monogram stamp. Old armorial bookplate of Clas Frietzky on inside of upper boards, another later bookplate on inside of lower boards. 2 volumes.
Löwendahl: China illustrata nova, 541. First French edition of Haoqiu zhuan, translated from the Wilkinson/Percy English version of 1761, the first important piece of Chinese imaginative literature to be published in Europe.
Haoqiu zhuan gives an idea of the everyday life of China, which was neglected by the scholarly researches of the missionaires (Löwendahl 514).
