"Until the appearance of the famous Swedish animal painter Bruno Liljefors (1860-1939) on the art scene, studies of animals, dead or alive, was a rarity among Swedish artists, with the exception of illustrations in zoological books.
Apart from a spell in Paris between 1856-58, Fagerlin spent his whole life in Düsseldorf beginning in 1853. Düsseldorf was not only one of the centres of art in Europe at the time, it also harboured a school of animal painters spearheaded by the famous animal painter Carl Friedrich Deiker (1836-1892). During the autumn 1882 Liljefors stayed with the Swedish painter August Jernberg in Düsseldorf and took lessons from Deiker. He certainly must have met Fagerlin during this period. It is interesting to note that Liljefors´s favorite animal in his paintings was to become the fox. Later he also kept live foxes in containments in order to study them. Düsseldorf also harbored one of Europe´s largest Zoo´s.
Alner Castle is a 15th Century castle situated in Nordrhein-Westfalen on the outskirts of the city of Hennef (Sieg). Between 1837-1848 it was in the possession of Maximiliam von Loe (1801-1850), County Director of Siegburg who made it the seat of the County administration. Following his death the castle was abandoned by his descendants and finally sold in 1870 to the famous Düsseldorf ophthalmologist Albert Mooren who in 1875 leased it to the Franciscan Brotherhood Paschalis. Fagerlin was most likely invited to participate in a hunt at Alner Castle in 1861 by Mooren. Before his purchase of Alner Castle, Mooren may well have rented the right to hunt in its surrounding forest."
