John Heartfield (1891-1968), born Helmut Herzfeld, German artist, early Dadaist as well as one of the most influential in the photomontage technique. He was a coomunist and opposed Nazism in the periodical AIZ (Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung) which led to his exile in Great Britain until he moved back to Leipzig in the DDR in 1950.
