NEW CONTEMPORARY DESIGN ROBERT CURRAN, "Outside material, the transfiguration of lines", MA work, HDK Steneby 2018, number 2 in a series of 3, steam bent ash, natural finish, plywood base, signed and numbered, height around 150 cm
These series of work began with an investigation into how organic form manifests itself in nature.
Not wanting to simply mimic the forms in nature Rob Curran looked into how organic form
manifests itself. As a designer he took reference from D´Arcy Thompson´s work on growth and
form and Arthur Wesley Dow´s work on Japanese composition. Writer Lafcadio Hearn´s ideas on
how we perceive the world around us, Hearn believes, depends on ethical conditions within us and
the environment we are surrounded by.
Artistically Curran tries to bring forward his findings into the material to evoke what cannot always
be verbalised. "Outside material, the transfiguration of lines" is a result of this and works on our
perception of light, space and volume and what a material can do. Steam bending wood by hand
allows for immediate input from the maker and feedback from the material. A symbiotic relationship
with an undeterminable result.

Rob Curran is a 34 year old designer and artist living in Dals Långed, Dalsland. He graduated with
his masters from HDK Steneby in 2018 and has exhibited internationally in Japan and the US.
He received the Konstnärsnämndens Arbetsstipendier in 2019, and scholarships from the Eric
Ericson Stiftelse and Göteborgs Slöjdförening in 2018 for his exam work "Outside Material, the
transfiguration of lines". His work was an award winner of Ung Svensk Form 2019, taking part in
the travelling exhibition.
Rob took his BA in mechanical engineering in Ireland and completed a one year course in
Industrial Design at Umeå Institute of Design. He has worked with Irish designer and artist Sasha
Sykes.
He specialises in furniture design and sculpture and is a founding member of the new co-working
studio, Studio Växt. His is an active member of Not Quite in Fengersfors.
