LITTERATUR
Olja 26 x 36 cm." (inlånad av Vera Flygare, née Fåhraeus, Malmö)
Painted during Thunman´s stay with Olof Fåhraeus and his wife at Eknäs in Södermanland County during the summer 1903. The realistic and decorative rendering of the subject foreshadows the work of Oskar Bergman (Stockholm 1879-1963 Saltsjöbaden), a protegé of the banker Ernest Thiel. The composition with a fur tree extending outside the confinement of the image, enhances the sense of space. That this is intentional and not an effect of the picture having been cropped, is evidenced by the existence of pinholes in each corner at the top. The pinholes also shows that the picture was painted plein air. The rockformation in the foreground bears striking resemblance to ancient nordic tombs. Thunman was fascinated by ancient Nordic history and the topic of his painting may precisely have been chosen for this reason.
Olof Fåhreaus acquired Eknäs Manor in 1880. In 1918 he sold the property to Oscar Lamm and moved to Ystad in Skåne County. In 1971 the descendents of Lamm bequeathed the property to a foundation instigated to Lamm´s memory. Eknäs, situated between the two lakes Långhalsen and Vadsbrosjön, drew attraction already in the eighteenth Century as witnessed by a pen and wash drawing of the property by Jonas Carl Linnerhielm (1758-1829) (Nordiska Museet NMA.0065098) (fig. 1).
Thunman studied at the Royal Academy in Stockholm between 1902-1906. He was a member of a group of artists called Konstnärslaget (The League of Artists), formed in Uppsala in 1905, counting John Bauer, Arthur Sjögren and Gusten Widerbäck amongst its members. Thunman was also a poet and songwriter. His most famous song is "Vi gå över daggstänkta berg" (We Go Over Dew-Sprinkled Mountains), a children´s song from 1900. A wanderer´s song, it was written in Flen during the summer 1900, a town in Södermanland County not far from Eknäs, where he served as child informant for the children of a local Bank Director. Throughout his life Thunman was an enthusiastic wanderer inspired by the inveterate wanderer the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau who crisscrossed large parts of Western Europe on foot in his lifetime. Thunman had a deep interest in the cultural history of Uppland County, his birthplace. During his walks he depicted historical sites dating back to the Vikingage in drawings not seldom accompanied with poems, which today are of significant historical interest. Matching the preciseness of his drawings, every single word is based on historical facts. His depictions of paganism are mostly based on the history of Uppland and its folk tradition).
