LOUISE CATHERINE BRESLAU (Tyskland 1856-1927): Porträtt av ung flicka i profil, signerad och daterad "18. L. Breslau. 79 / Paris". Svart, röd och vit krita på papper, 56x43 cm
Portrait of a Girl: signed and dated, black, red and white chalk on paper.
The sitter possibly depicts a student at Académie Julian in Paris.
The use of black, red and white chalk follows a two century long French tradition in the execution of drawings, brought to its height by Antoine Watteau
Born in Munich, Breslau spent her youth in Switzerland where her father was professor at the University in Zurich. In 1874 she moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian, one of the few places in Europe available for young women to study art. Over the years, Breslau became a well-regarded colleague to some of the day´s most popular artists and writers including Edgar Degas and Anatole France. In 1879, Breslau was the only student from the Académie Julian women´s atelier to exhibit at the Paris Salon. Shortly afterwards she opened her own atelier and was becoming a regular contributor and medal winner at the annual Salon. Due to her success at the Salon and favorable notice from the critics, Breslau received numerous commissions from wealthy Parisians. Breslau´s favorite media was pastel. She joined the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1890, not only exhibiting in its salons but also serving on the jury. She eventually became the third woman artist, and the first foreign woman artist to be bestowed France´s Legion of Honor award.
Beslau was part of the Scandinavian circle of artists active in Paris in the 1870-1880s. In particular she forged a close friendship with Ernst Josephson (1851-1906), as witnessed by two portraits they painted of each other in 1886, both in Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (NM 2155 and NMGrh 2322).
