Provenance: The artist´s deceased estate
Executed around 1905-10 while Sjöberg lived on the island Långviksskär situated outside the island of Nämndö in the outermost Stockholm archipelago, a mile south of the island of Sandhamn. Sandhamn had a very strategic location at the entrance to Stockholm. By the turn of the century with the arrival of steamboats, it became a popular summer resort for both writers and artists and the Stockholm society. Axel Sjöberg arrived at Långviksskär in the mid-1890s where he rented a cottage from the local fishing population. Sjöberg was a friend of Bruno Liljefors, the celebrated animal painter, who owned the neighbouring Bullerö archipelago and they often participated in bird hunting together. In 1920 Sjöberg moved to Sandhamn but returned regularly to Långviksskär where he had kept a studio and owned fishing- and hunting rights. Sjöberg is closely affiliated with the culture on the island. In 1884, following a hunting expedition on the island, most of the island was bought by the American diplomat William Widgery Thomas whom fell in love with the area. In 1983 his grandson sold the island to Skärgårdsstiftelsen, an ideological foundation that owns substantial parts of the Stockholm archipelago. The house that Thomas had built is today used as accommodation for recipients of the Axel Sjöberg fellowship.
