EDWARD FISHER (1722-1782) - efter SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS (1723-92). Lady Elisabeth Keppel, mezzotintgravyr, London, E. Fisher, 1762. Ca 595x365 mm. Ramad.
Lady Elizabeth Keppel and a servant are shown arranging a garland around a statue of Hymen, the god of marriage. The picture commemorates Lady Elizabeth´s role as bridesmaid at the wedding of George III and Queen Charlotte in 1761. The Latin inscription, from a celebrated classical marriage poem by Catullus, invokes Hymen´s blessing on the happy couple. (Tate Gallery).
Reynolds finished the painting in January 1762 and Fisher´s print must have appeared shortly thereafter. 15s. was a very high price for a print at this date. (British Museum).
