Henri Matisse was a French artist, leader of the Fauve group, regarded as one of the great formative figures in 20th century art, a master of the use of color and form to convey emotional expression.

He was born in December 1869 in Le Cateau, France and began painting during a convalescence from an operation due to an attack of appendicitis. After having given up his law career Matisse
moved to Paris in 1892 to study art and became with time an accomplished painter, sculptor and graphic designer, and one of the most influential artists of the 1900s.

Matisse´s true artistic liberation, in terms of the use of color to render forms and organize spatial planes, came about first through the influence of the French painters Paul Gauguin and Paul Cézanne and the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. While he was regarded as a leader of radicalism in the arts, Matisse gained the approval of a number of influential critics and collectors, including the American expatriate writer Gertrude Stein and several Russian collectors.

Lisette Clarnète was Matisse´s favored model from 1928 to 1933. She was a part time nurse to Madame Matisse and also worked as the artist´s studio assistant. The model posed for some important works of the artist, such as The Yellow Robe (1929-1931). In the actual drawing
Lisette poses in an armchair as an Oriental. For Matisse, the 1920s, was an orientalizing period, as his odalisques fused his own devotion to the nude female figure. Matisse used often drawing to help him express his thoughts, whilst also working out stylistic or compositional issues.

Matisse has influenced a wide range of important 20th century painters, from Hans Hofmann to Tom Wesselmann and David Hockney. Unlike many artists, he became internationally popular during his lifetime, enjoying the favor of collectors, art critics and the younger generation of artists.

"Drawing is like making an expressive gesture with the advantage of permanence."
Henri Matisse

"Exactitude is not truth."
