PLATES ON ALHAMBRA AND CORDOVA 1804. LOZANO, PABLO. Antigüedades arabes de Espan~a. Parte segunda, que contiene los letreros ara´bigos que quedan en el palacio de la Alhambra de Granada y algunos de la ciudad de Co´rdoba, publicados por la Real academia de San Fernando e´ interpretados y explicados de acuerdo suyo por don Pablo Lozano... Madrid, imprenta Real, 1804. Volume II only.
Imperial folio (c. 605 x 410 mm.). (8), 23 pp. 60 partly folding engraved plates, including 2 engraved titles (consist of 26, 5 and 29 plates). Probably lacking 1 plate. Almost all plates with dampstains to upper and lower margins, mostly corners, but more in the beginning, about 20 also affecting the plate area, also some foxing, 2 plates with larger repairs to margins, a few minor marginal repairs, a few creased, 3 plates with small repair to outer margin.
Contemporary half calf, gilt spine with orange-red title label and the second one in vellum, gilt monogram J D (Jacob De la Gardie) to upper part, worn and heavily dampstained, joints partly split, some damages to spine, first free endpaper dampstained, creased and with holes, endpaper with small repaired tear. On inside of upper cover a small library note in ink. Printed title creased and with dampstains, some spotting and small hole, library label on top, text otherwise with some spotting and foxing.
Pablo Lozano y Casela (1749-1822). First volume was published in 1780 and contains 31 plates. Engraved title: "Antiguedades arabes de Espana", second title: "Descripcion de la Santa Iglesia Cathedral de Cordova".
Plates of Alhambra and Cordova including sections, elevations and plans, together with many plates of Islamic calligraphy, and moorish art. Some of the plates by Manuel Salvador Carmona.
Volume 2 only, probably lacking one plate. Sold as collection of plates, not subject to return.
Provenance: Charlottenlund castle in south of Sweden (Snårestads socken, Ystads kommun). Part of the library inherited from the castle of Löberöd, where Jacob De la Gardie (1768-1842) owned a large library consisting of c. 18.000 volumes, which was one of the largest private libraries in Sweden at that time. In the years 1813-15 De la Gardie was Swedish ambassador in Spain.
